# Pairwise comparison method for team decisions

Your team can discuss every option and still leave the ordering unresolved. The pairwise comparison method narrows each judgment to two options at a time. Start with a focused question, collect the comparisons, and examine what those judgments do and do not establish.

## What is a pairwise comparison and when should a team use one?

A pairwise comparison is a judgment between two alternatives. Use a head-to-head question when you want participants to express a preference between a specific pair, rather than assign separate numeric ratings. 2. **Describe the options.** Give participants the same information about each alternative.

5. **Inspect the pattern.** Look for ties, cycles, and differences between participants before drawing an overall conclusion.

These hypothetical preferences are consistent with A above B above C. This example contains no real participant data and does not establish that A is objectively best. It shows one recorded ordering for one question.

## How many pairwise comparisons do you need?

The count treats A vs. B and B vs. A as the same pair. It excludes comparing an option with itself. It is a count for one complete set, not a promised question count for ChoiceBoard.

If every participant completes every pair for every factor, multiply the pair count by the number of participants and factors. That statement applies only to that exhaustive design. A different sampling or ranking method can use a different set of questions.

## Can pairwise preferences contradict one another?

In the illustrative exercise above, change the A vs. C answer to C. You now have that cycle. Each option has one preferred result and one nonpreferred result, so simple win counts would tie.

Our recommendation is to revisit the reasoning before forcing an order. Check whether the question changed in the participant’s mind, whether information was missing, or whether a trade-off remains unresolved. A cycle is something to investigate, not evidence that a participant’s view should be discarded.
